SUPER EAGLES: SACK PESEIRO NOW, 3 SPORTS WRITERS URGE NFF

Three sports journalists based in Abuja on Sunday urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to relieve Jose Peseiro of his Super Eagles Head Coach job before it is too late.

They made the call following the Eagles’ 0-1 loss to Guinea Bissau on Friday in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Romanus Ugwu, a sports writer and an Assistant Editor with the Sun Newspaper, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that retaining Peseiro was like holding on to expired drug.

“There is nothing we can do unless the NFF takes action, but if you ask me, I will automatically ask for the sack of Peseiro because he has not given us anything.

“Subsequently I will have to decide whether to watch Super Eagles match. I can’t be devastated like this all the time after Super Eagles match.

“I have learnt not to invest emotions in the team because I know that certainly they will disappoint.

“I am not surprised with the outcome of the game but I expected that after we lost the World Cup ticket to Ghana, that we are going to see something else.

“All of a sudden, we are seeing thunder striking twice at the same place,” Ugwu said.

For Ndubueze Chidoka, Chairman of a faction of the FCT Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), noted that everything about the country’s football was on the decline.

“I am disappointed that the Eagles could not fly considering the fact that we are nursing the pain of not qualifying for the World Cup when Ghana came to deny us the ticket at this same venue.

“And many football fans were looking up to the Super Eagles to make up in subsequent matches.

“It was unfortunate that the Super Eagles lost to Guinea Bissau barely 42 hours after the under-23 team drew against Guinea.

“This is a humiliation. The worst would have been a draw. For Guinea to come here and defeat us means that we don’t have a team and a coach.

“Everything about our football is going down drastically and something urgent must be done,” Chidoka said.

A former chairman of FCT SWAN, Victor Iroele, on his part said a lot of factors contributed to the team’s lacklustre performance in recent times.

Iroele noted that weather and the pitch could be contributing factors to the poor show of the team.

But he added that the technical crew had a lot of work to do if they would be retained

“NFF needs to apply the big stick if necessary, to save the country from further embarrassing outings and to ensure the country did not miss the AFCON ticket, the way it missed the World Cup ticket.” (NAN)

Published

on

Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen has been named one of the Most Valuable Players of the 2022/23 Serie A season.

This was made known on the league’s website on Friday.

It said that the rankings were drawn up considering the advanced analysis of Stats Perform, created from the tracking data recorded with the Hawk-Eye system.

“The rating system, patented in 2010 with K-Sport and scientifically validated, considers not only statistical data and technical events but also positional data. This makes it possible to analyse crucial aspects such as movement without the ball and thus optimal movements, game choices, and the contribution to the technical and physical efficiency of the team, which allow for an objective and qualitative evaluation of the performance. For the final calculation were considered all matches played in Serie A (except Round 38),” it added.

Below is the list of the Serie A Most Valuable Players:

BEST PLAYERS OF THE SEASON:

BEST UNDER 23: Nicolò Fagioli (Juventus)

BEST GOALKEEPER: Ivan Provedel (Lazio)

BEST DEFENDER: Minjae Kim (Napoli)

BEST MIDFIELDER: Nicolò Barella (Inter)

BEST STRIKER: Victor Osimhen (Napoli)

Meanwhile, “The best under-23, goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker will receive the trophy on the pitch on the final matchday of the season.”

Joshua Will Fight Whyte August, Wilder December – Hearn

Published

• ‘AJ’s camp approached for a Fury fight’

Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has revealed the rest of the former heavyweight boxing champion’s fights this year, starting with a date with Dillian Whyte in August, reports boxing-social.com.

Hearn, yesterday, revealed that Joshua’s camp has received communication from Fury’s team about a potential fight. Fury has been linked to most heavyweights as he searches for a summer opponent and has now turned his attention back to Joshua.

“The Gypsy King’s promoters have made contact with Hearn about a Wembley fight for September, although the Matchroom boss denies a ‘draft contract’ has been received.

“AJ had been expected to return this August in the UK, most likely against Dillian Whyte, and then take on Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia in December.
Hearn admitted they are ‘interested’ in a Fury fight, but are unlikely to divert from their original plans in the ‘hope’ the WBC champion is genuine.
Speaking to iFL TV, Hearn said: “They’re (Fury’s team) telling us they want to fight you (Joshua), but we’re fighting in August and September, that’s our plan, but I’ll go through the process and see how real this is.

“Right now, our plan remains the same, August and Wilder in December; so, we’ll see what happens in Saudi Arabia this week. That’s our plan, that’s what we’re moving forward with this week, if we can’t make that happen we’ll 100 per cent look at the Fury fight.

“Will we give up those fights and the massive payday against Wilder on the hope of making the Fury fight, probably not, but I will go through the motions and see where we go with it.

“Of course, we’re interested in that fight, but we just don’t know what to think and the confidence we have in basing our plans around Tyson Fury is very thin.” If the all-British blockbuster becomes a reality, it will throw Saudi Arabia’s plans to host Fury-Usyk and Joshua-Wilder on the same night into disarray.

Iwobi’s Everton Survive As Iheanacho, Ndidi’s Leicester City Relegated

Awoniyi can’t stop scoring as Forest hold Palace

Super Eagles’ midfielder, Alex Iwobi, was ecstatic as Everton escaped relegation on a dramatic final day of 2022/23 English Premier League season.

Everton needed a win to ensure another stay in the elite division of English football no matter what happened at Leeds and Leicester City.
The Liverpool-based side, which has the second-longest residence in the upper division, saw their hopes threatened early in the first half when news filtered in that Leicester City had taken the lead against West Ham through Harvey Barnes.

But the Merseysiders’ nerves were calmed in the 57th minute when Abdoulaye Doucoure released an unstoppable shot to give the home team the lead.
Thereafter, Sean Dyche knew that all Everton needed to do to remain a Premier League team was to defend their advantage and they went about the job tenaciously.

Even with 10 minutes added time, Everton stuck to their task until the referee called off the game.
The win made Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat of West Ham meaningless, as they became the second team after Blackburn Rovers to win the title and then go down shortly.

That means that Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi will play in the second-tier English Championship next season.
Leeds had no hopes of survival after surrendering to a 1-4 home defeat by Tottenham.

It means they, alongside Leicester and Southampton will play in the lower division next season.

Elsewhere, Taiwo Awoniyi continued his unstoppable form in front of goal when he netted Nottingham Forest’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
With Forest having secured their Premier League status last weekend and Palace long since safe, there was a celebratory atmosphere at Selhurst Park before kick-off.

Awoniyi kept the away fans in good spirits when he raced on to Morgan Gibbs-White’s superb through ball, twisted and turned before firing into the bottom corner on 31 minutes.

It came just a minute after Eberechi Eze had seen his close-range effort blocked on the line by his own team-mate, Jordan Ayew, at the other end.

Palace were on top for much of the second half and found the equaliser after 66 minutes when Will Hughes headed in from Michael Olise’s cross.

Neither side was able to find a winner and both teams can begin their plans for next season in earnest, although for Palace it remains to be seen whether that will be with Roy Hodgson at the helm.

At the Emirates, Arsenal defeated Wolves 5-0 with the departing Granit Xhaka netting twice. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Kiwior scored the other goals.

Relegated Southampton drew 4-4 with Liverpool, Man United defeated Fulham 2-1, Chelsea drew 1-1 with Newcastle, Aston Villa beat Brighton 2-1, while Brentford beat champions, Man City 1-0.
