Isah Funtua, a renowned Economist writes:
“In Nigeria, there are basically three job functions in the contractual agreement between university lecturers and their employers viz: Teaching, Research and Community Service. Amongst these it is only teaching that requires physical interface with students in the university classrooms and labs, others are don’t.
“Interestingly, of all these three functions , the most important in the academia is research. Because while teaching is the transfer of knowledge to students, research is the creation of knowledge.
“During strikes , #ASUU members only stop attending to classes, but for research , I make bold to tell you it is at that material time that they intensify their reaserch and scholarship endeavours. For example, three out of the four Scopus-indexed papers I co-authoured were written during 2020 strike. Of all the over 80 citations , they attract , it means my University is been recognized in the global circle of Economics, hence, it increases the university’s visibility and recognition, global ranking and rating, which will subsequently impact on the University in all facets
“So when I hear someone clamouring for no-work-no-pay rule I simply consider him as ignorant of the employment contractual agreement between lecturers and their employers or a mischief maker. Because in all strikes ASUU members do continue with their reaserch and community service endeavours.
“In the wake of this ongoing strike, a loyal ASUU member is seen below defying the hazy weather of Monday 16/03/2022 to reach his office for research.”
